06 From holiday camps for disadvantaged children to bike rides raising money for brain cancer and art classes for people with disabilities, Unley Council helps support those who make the community a brighter place. One such group is Puddle Jumpers. It brings smiles to children’s faces. The organisation, based at Forest ville, received a Community Grant this year from Council that , along with the suppor t from other businesses and donations, has helped it meet the needs of its growing client base. Founded in 2012, by Melanie Tate, Puddle Jumpers provides programs for disadvantaged children. “Puddle Jumpers provides oppor tunities and suppor t for children and families at risk, through holidays and recreational activities designed to promote personal, social, cultural grow th and development ,” says Melanie. “A big part of what we do is about providing kids in need with a break from their ever yday lives and planting seeds with them that any thing is possible, while at the same time helping young adults develop leadership skills and belief in themselves that they can make a difference.” The group, largely run by volunteers, has so far run eight camps and four activity days. This year it’s planning on seven camps and seven activity days, but that’s largely dependent on the amount of funding they raise. Melanie says each camp costs approximately $5 000 to run - including all transport, activities, accommodation, food, materials, stationery and equipment. Puddle Jumpers is also hoping to expand into other areas. The grant they received from Council helped the group host the Marvelous Magic Show, at tended by 200 people from the local community. “In the future we have big plans to expand our services Jumping puddles in Unley “A big part of what we do is about providing kids in need with a break from their everyday lives and planting seeds with them that anything is possible." Melanie Tate
