Evelyn Koshnitsky had a big impact on chess in Australia. For over 50 years she worked tirelessly to promote the game in both junior and senior ranks, and especially to school-aged girls. The long term resident of Fisher Street, Malvern, and great granddaughter of the first Mayor of Unley, John H. Cooke J.P. , ran junior chess in South Australia from 1961 to 2001. She died in October last year, aged 99. Evelyn was passionate about the game and received many awards including the British Empire Medal and the Order of Australia. She was blessed with a fabulous sense of humour and was devoted to her husband Garry, an Australian Chess Champion. Evelyn and Garry helped organise hundreds of events in Adelaide, ranging from small weekenders to the World Junior Championship in 1988. She also edited and published chess magazines. Sunday Mail chess columnist Alan Goldsmith says Evelyn had a great love of life and people. “She hated injustice and racism. She loved music, especially opera, and read widely. And she loved chess!” says Alan. The Evelyn Koshnitsky Memorial Checkmate Open will be held on the 11th and 12th of July at the Fullarton Park Community Centre. ‘ The Evelyn’ Women and Girls Chess Tournament will be held from the 13th to 16th of July at the Chess Centre of South Australia near Light Square in the city. Weekly games are also held in the city on Tuesday nights. To find out more visit sachess.asn.au Nothing beats a traditional handmade wooden toy. Even better when it’s created locally! The Shed volunteers at the Clarence Park Community Centre are now selling their wares online with all the funds going back into suppor ting the program. Three mornings a week volunteers spend time at the Shed to mend broken toys, puzzles, home corner furniture and other wooden designs. They also make a wide range of items to sell in the Shop, including wooden street signs, doll strollers, planes, trains and boats from the large supply of materials donated over the years. The Shed Shop and online store is run by The Shed Shop Coordinator, Sharon Zacher-Partington, with suppor t from the centre staff and board. Sharon says the Shop began as a way to find a home for the many donated toys restored to their former glory. “Some volunteers got creative and made items to sell, and for the last few years we have had a small supply of items for sale at very affordable prices,” says Sharon. The online store will generate income for the program and provide funds to adver tise for more volunteers. You can visit the Shed Shop at 72-74 East Avenue, Black Forest on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 9am to 12 noon, or check out the online shop at www.madeit.com.au To find out more about volunteering, or about what’s available to buy, call the Clarence Park Community Centre on 8293 8166.
