06 Getting back to nature Unley residents are set to lead more active lifestyles as Council’s Active Unley program is rolled out through the city’s leafy green streets, parks and open spaces. Active Unley, which is a key action of the Council’s Community Plan 2033, will involve a series of events and programs throughout 2015/16 aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and providing oppor tunities for the community to get outdoors, and participate in physical activity. City of Unley Spor t and Recreation Planner John Wilkinson says Active Unley aims to consolidate much of the good work happening throughout the city in regards to promoting an active and healthy community. “ T he Unley area is a perfect location to get out and about and enjoy the beautiful environs that the city boasts. Much of the local area is relatively flat so there is no better place to jump on a bike, go for a walk or visit some of our wonderful parks,” says John. “In recent times we have taken steps to look at our open spaces in different ways and work with partners such as sporting and recreation clubs, community organisations and schools to ensure our spaces are of the highest quality and used to their full potential,” he says. Active Unley is encouraging ex tensive community support through the Your Say Unley forum and other social media platforms in which the Council aims to gain more information and feedback to help shape new infrastructure upgrades and programs. The program will take over every corner of the City. From kicking a footy at Goodwood Oval to having a coffee on King William Road, the program aims to get people out and about and exploring their own backyards. Long time Unley resident and father of two Paul Carroll, says he is a big fan of getting his family out and about in the Unley area.
