UNLEYLIFE 17 Unley Museum looks to build its modern collection With late twentieth century modernity in vogue through fashion and pop culture, such as the television series Mad Men, it seems that now is the time to hold onto our recent past before much of it is lost. The Unley Museum sees the impor tance of saving this part of our heritage. Museum Curator Karen Paris says there is more perceived value at tached to objects and photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth century, but less to items from the 1950s on. “Much of the material from this period is still in use, however if we fail to see the value in it people will soon begin to dispose of these objects as they are replaced with contemporary technology,” she says. Karen says that items such as melamine canister sets, advertising and billboards, and clothing and photographs from this period are all highly impor tant and interesting in recording our social history. “ T he 1950s was an important period for Australia as it was forming and consolidating a national identity based around the diggers, mateship, modern culture and the rise of women in the workforce,” she says. If you have items from this period you would like to donate, that have a relationship with Unley, please contact the museum on 8372 5117 or email musem@unley.sa .gov.au Karen Paris.
