The extraordinary, and ever increasing, success of Unley’s annual Unley Gourmet Gala event is a reminder of the role that Council plays in supporting its business community. One of the key reasons for that success is the clever and persistent marketing by Council staff, both through traditional avenues and increasingly through social media, in par ticular Council’s Facebook page and Twitter account. This has broadened the reach of the Unley Gourmet Gala to the extent that this year’s estimated attendance far exceeds our city’s population of 38,000. By broadening its appeal beyond our City boundaries we also generate more economic activity for businesses within Unley. With an estimated average spend of $30 per person that equates to a total economic boost this year of more than $1 million, just from the one event. Hosting yet again a colourful and tremendously successful stage star t in the Santos Tour Down Under brought many thousands into our city. Then there was Unley’s summer events program, including the Double Shot Coffee Fiesta and five outdoor cinema events that together at tracted another 10,000 plus visitors. The SANFL, should it succeed in building attendance numbers, has real potential to provide a further economic injection in Unley throughout its winter football program, while at the Adelaide Showground a year-round program of events brings more than a million visitors a year, providing a major boost to the surrounding Goodwood economy. These events, supported strongly by Council, are a sure way of keeping the City of Unley on the economic radar at a time of increasing competition from other regions around Adelaide, especially the CBD itself. Indicators of success include the opening of new restaurants and businesses, such as those featured in this issue of Unley Life. Not everyone at first thought would see Centennial Park Cemetery as a major economic asset to our city, but as the State’s largest cemetery it most definitely is and prudent management is vital to its success. On behalf of Council I would like to welcome incoming CEO Ms Janet Miller, whose extensive business experience will undoubtedly lead to further grow th and development of the cemetery. We also congratulate and thank previous CEO Bryan Elliott for his vision and leadership of a highly professional organisation during 12 years of service.
