UNLEYLIFE 03 Peter Nelson. The City of Unley proudly awarded its 2016 Australia Day Citizen of the Year to Peter Nelson. Peter is no stranger to helping those in need, an ex-military man, volunteering his time is something that comes naturally. “It’s rewarding helping people and it makes you feel good about yourself which is impor tant, and it gives you something to do,” Peter says. Dedicating his time to eight charities, Peter is a major contributor to the Unley community. “ T he City of Unley has a community feel about it which I haven't seen for a long time having lived all around the world with the forces,” Peter says. Since retirement in 2012, Peter divides his time between membership commitments and charity work. “I just do whatever needs to be done next, but I have set times to do cer tain things, like every third Wednesday night is Fred’s Van, so it’s very structured,” Peter says. Peter says working with youth is the most rewarding and is humbled by his award. “I guess I just spend all my time helping people and I don’t do it for the kudos and pat on the back.” On the year ahead, Peter says he won’t slow down. “I just like working for the local community it gives me a buzz. I won’t be stopping anytime soon.” Council’s Australia Day festivities included a special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony which saw 56 Unley residents become Australian citizens, and a street party on Oxford Terrace with storytelling by Mem Fox, children’s activities, a free sausage sizzle and ice cream.
