UNLEYLIFE 15 UNLEYLIFE 15 Unley Libraries’ opening hours are being reviewed to ensure they are in line with the needs and changing habits of library users. The City of Unley is reviewing the opening hours following research from the Australian Library and Information Association. The Association recently endorsed new guidelines to help councils set their library opening hours to make them more consistent, predictable and easy for customers. City of Unley Library and Museum Services Manager Hanlie Erasmus says the Unley Libraries’ current opening hours are spread across seven days and are placed well above the benchmark average but there is still more the Council could do. “User behaviour has significantly changed in recent years and with the introduction of the One Card Net work, which allows customers to pick up and return library items at any library in the State, libraries have to also keep up and adapt,” says Ms Erasmus. “ We are determined to ensure that our hours always reflect the community’s needs and wishes.” The City of Unley has no intention to reduce or increase the total opening hours of the library service. It is simply seeking feedback from library users about how and when they use the library and what opening hours would be most convenient. The Council will undertake a comprehensive community engagement program mid-year. In a program called ‘pop in and play,’ anyone who knows a tune is encouraged to come to the library and have a try. In May the piano moved from the entrance to further into the hear t of the library so everyone could see it. Many talented pianists have already graced the library with their melodies, to the delight of both customers and staff. The piano is already attracting regulars and its popularity will only grow with time.
