UNLEYLIFE 19 Record. Rewind. Relive. Unley Libraries 50th Birthday Festival 4-5 November Join us to celebrate our 50th Birthday with a range of activities for all ages at the Unley Library and Unley Town Hall, Oxford Terrace, Unley. For more information visit unley.sa .gov.au “Even in the 21st century we are making a huge impact on the quality of people’s lives,” says Unley Librarian Hanlie Erasmus. She describes Rosie, who lives in a supported residential facility. Her carer asked Hanlie if she could bring a couple of people from the facility to learn how to send emails and work on a computer, because they would be too scared to visit a library when it was busy. ‘ We arranged for this little group to come in when the library was closed,” Hanlie says. “Rosie just wanted to learn how to send and receive emails. Then she became keen to learn how to book a computer by herself. “I will never forget the first time Rosie came on her own. She booked the computer, opened her emails, and then she started to cry. When one of the staff asked what’s wrong, she said: ‘My daughter lives in England, and this is the first time I’ve been able to talk to her directly. I sent her an email and there’s an email back from her.’ “I was just so grateful to be part of that, to make such a change for the better in someone’s life.”
