Unley Publications : Unley Life Spring 2017
As I look back over my seven years as Mayor of the City of Unley, I recognise what a great privilege it’s been to serve the community in this role. I feel enormous pride in what your Council has achieved and also considerable pleasure at the many heart-warming moments these years have provided. Mayors and all Elected Members are only custodians of those roles in local government. None is indispensable and it would be a great mistake for any of us to believe we are the only people fit for the job. We have a wonderful community in Unley and I have no doubt at all that there are any number of people who share the dedication and resolve required of a Mayor. I am confident I leave this City in the very best hands, with a strong and supportive team of Elected Members who will carry on their fine work uninterrupted. I came to this Council as its youngest ever Elected Member at the age of 23, becoming Mayor four years later. I think this signified a desire by our community for leadership that reflected youthful energy and an openness to new and progressive ideas. And I have no doubt that whoever takes on this role next will build on the initiatives and directions now established by Council. You might be surprised by the things that have given me the greatest pleasure during this period: citizenship ceremonies, when new residents take one of the most significant steps of their lives; 100th birthdays and 70th wedding anniversaries, when generations celebrate together; explaining to schoolchildren how local government works, urging them to get involved when they’re able. And of course I’m pleased by many of Council’s major achievements: making Unley an age-friendly city; the Brownhill-Keswick creeks stormwater project; regional collaboration with neighbouring councils; the creation of Unley Central and the Goodwood Road rejuvenation; and, of course, our expanding reputation for great festivals and events. I firmly believe that, in general, Council has made the right call on all its major decisions during this period. This essentially comes down to having a good working environment with great relationships between the Elected Members, Council staff and you, our community. I thank all of you, as I take on another major challenge in my life, for trusting me with such a rewarding and responsible role. Lachlan Clyne is currently on leave and is looking to resign from his Mayoral position in January 2018. Deputy Mayor Don Palmer will take over the Mayoral responsibilities until January 2018, at which time a new Mayor will be elected from within the Council.
