08 A generous donation from the Bendigo Goodwood Community Bank is helping local residents get to-and-from hundreds of vital hospital appointments. Donated in 2012, the Bendigo Bank Car is used in a number of programs, but primarily by City of Unley community transpor t volunteers. The volunteers drive eligible Unley residents (over the age of 65), who have inadequate access to transpor t, to medical appointments, rehabilitation and various social inclusion programs, as well as providing suppor ted shopping assistance. Community Transport Coordinator for the City of Unley’s Active Ageing Team Moira Heppenstall says the car provides a vital service in the community. “ T he car allows volunteers who do not wish to use their own vehicles or do not have suitable vehicles to support clients with transpor t,” she says. “ T his increases the availability of services and allows more transport support to be offered to our clients. Without the continued suppor t of the donated car many residents would be unable to attend vital appointments.” Patricia Thatcher is one resident who relies on the support of the Council car to take her to a range of medical appointments. “It’s always been important to me, but par ticularly since I broke my wrist and the medical appointments have been prolific,” she says. “Bendigo Bank is to be applauded for donating the car to help the local community get the help they need. It’s a truly excellent program from Unley Council, administered by competent and caring officers and volunteers.” For more information phone 8372 5111.
