Unley Publications : Unley Life Spring 2017
UNLEYLIFE 11 Amelia Connell aka Mad Sqweelz Milz I have been a member of Adelaide Roller Derby for... three years. I started on skates at the age of five with artistic skating, but had almost a 20 year break before putting on skates again to try out for roller derby. I now put on the red, black and leopard print and play for the Mile Die Club. I have lived in the City of Unley for... since moving from the country in 2002 to study at university, I have lived in six different share houses from Wayville to Unley to Goodwood and now Forestville. My earliest memory (or first impression) of the area was... living as a Uni student, I didn’t have much money to spend, so my friend and I would walk down to the Goodwood community centre and enjoy the kickboxing lessons. I also used to spend many days in the Goodwood and Unley libraries borrowing magazines, books and videos. What I love about the area is... that it is so beautiful, the streets are filled with trees, the big old houses, the community life and accessible to shopping, cafes and transport to the city. My favourite local café/business/park is... I love my local café Dear Daisy, their green smoothies are awesome and the staff are so friendly. My par tner and I occasionally go on lovely bike rides through the little laneways and bike paths of Unley, it’s hard to keep your eyes on the path when the views are so stunning. I love Roller Derby because.... it is a very inclusive community, it builds up your strength in body, mind and soul. Plus I get to play amongst and against a great bunch of women. Every day I am constantly learning new things and surprised at what my body can handle on the track. The best piece of advice I was ever given... laughter is the best medicine.
