A Mayoral farewell After seven years in the role, and before leaving to pursue a career in state politics, we asked Lachlan Clyne to tell us in his own words what he loved most about being the Mayor of Unley. What inspired you to take on the role? My term as a Councillor inspired me - it opened my eyes to the impact that civic leadership can have at a local level. How did you feel the first time you put on the robes? It felt like a new beginning, the start of a new phase if you will. So, I was filled with optimism and eagerness to explore how we could make Unley a leading Council. What has been the biggest achievement for you as Mayor? Seeing Goodwood Road transformed in a way that reflects the eclectic, artistic, spirited nature of the neighbourhood. What are some of your most memorable moments? Sturt winning two Premierships, firing the starting gun of the Tour Down Under, chairing Council meetings through hotly debated items, like Unley Central, and honouring ‘Unley’s Own’ the 27th Battalion when we closed Unley Road and enabled descendants to march with soldiers, 100 years after the 27th departed for Gallipoli. What have you loved most about being Mayor? That the people I have spent the most time with - staff, elected members, community leaders and residents - have all contributed their thoughts and efforts towards making our community better. We are individually, and collectively, trying to improve our community and make it better. This is a great aspect of Unley that we must never take for granted or be complacent about. What is the funniest thing that happened while you were Mayor? Standing in my pyjamas, in the car park of the Council, on the night of the debate about Brownhill and Keswick creeks’ stormwater management. I was on a leave of absence to be with my wife and our first-born child Matilda, but it looked like the motion was about to fail and Unley would therefore not be signing up to a plan which would ensure we were ‘flood proof ’. So, I was about to burst through the doors wearing very un-Mayoral garb when someone came out and told me the item had successfully passed and I didn’t need to go in. I was greatly relieved and only one or two people knew I was down there, until now! What will you miss most about being Mayor? Citizenship ceremonies, and, call me crazy but I think I’ll miss chairing the Council meetings. Whilst it is healthy to have a degree of skepticism about our pollies, I think we need to be careful not to run our democratic institutions down too much nor the people who try to make the mechanics of it work. Why should people consider running for Council? If not you, then who? The good things that we all enjoy about our local community didn’t just fall out of the sky and happen miraculously. They occurred because good people put their time and effort into trying to make this community better. The Unley community is filled with incredibly talented people who have a wealth of experience and skills that if directed towards community goals will further improve our society.
