Unley Publications : Unley Life Spring 2016
I write this just after my return from France, a visit that was principally about taking part in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Pozières. This was an historic occasion and one that’s especially relevant to the City of Unley through the role played by Australia’s 27th Battalion, which became known as “Unley’s Own” due to its inclusion of many local men. But this visit also offered a chance to explore some of the opportunities that will arise through the $50 billion submarine contract awarded to French company DCNS, including promoting to them the great residential opportunities that exist in our City. I’ve also been especially proud to share in the 50th birthday celebrations of the Unley Library Service. As our stories in this issue of Unley Life illustrate, the role of a local library has greatly changed over the years as they have become even more valuable and relevant as gateways to whole of life learning for the whole community. I particularly want to congratulate our fantastic library staff, led by librarian Hanlie Erasmus who, as she says, even in the 21st century continue to make a huge impact on peoples’ lives, not least through the creative employment of new technologies. Council business plans and budgets are hardly as exciting as a thriller from our libraries, but they’re impor tant nonetheless because it’s your money being spent and we want you to know the benefits it brings to your City. Here we’ve provided a concise outline of the services, programs and activities we plan to provide over the next year and what they will cost. One of our key focus areas this year is the continued development of Unley’s main streets, the arteries that link and bring life and opportunity to our City. A more detailed version of the Business Plan can be found on Council’s website. And on a lighter note, we take a look at health and wellbeing businesses in Unley, like fitness studios and health food shops. After all that French food, I think this could be an area to which I may have to pay personal attention to.
